Thai Massage Stretches for Low Back Pain, Hip Openers & Tight Hamstrings

These Thai Massage stretches for low back pain, hip openers and tight hamstrings are a perfect sequence to help counteract the impact of everyday life.

When you sit at desk or car for hours, or on the opposite end, are often on your feet or exercise a lot, these areas of your body are typically screaming out for help.

Stretching them is also one of the keys to preserving your body and helping you to feel and stay younger. On the other hand, when your low back, hips and hamstrings are allowed to keep tightening up, letting fascia adhesions build, it can lead to all kinds of pain and problems down the line.

That includes big issues like hip replacements, spinal fusion, and knee replacements.

This is a more dynamic flow, but at the same time I am teaching this to a group of 100 students with absolutely no experience in giving Thai Massage.

One of the keys to getting this right and practicing safely is to watch the video a few times before trying it out. Also check in with your partner and have them show you their flexibility. Practice it first on people who have no limitations or pains happening so you can test it out and then adapt it as needed.

How to Give Thai Yoga Foot Massage For Relaxation & Stress Relief

This tutorial on how to give a Thai Yoga Foot Massage for relaxation and stress relief will help teach you the skills to give an incredible foot massage.

Taught live at the Wanderlust Yoga Festival in Squaw Valley to a group of 85 students who had never given a Thai Yoga Massage before.

By the end of a 90-minute workshop each student was able to give an amazing Thai Foot Massage. It goes to show that we all have the ability to give an amazing massage and once you learn a few key principles and techniques it does not take long to put it into practice.

Once you have their attention then you can go into more detail about what Thai Massage offers, how you can help and what the massage session is all about.

Going With Your Gut: Common Digestive Problems And Treatments

Gut health is an important part of your overall well-being, and unfortunately, there are many factors that contribute to it that can leave you feeling pain, discomfort, or fatigue.  From your diet to your exercise routine, there are several things that play a big role in the way you feel, and when something is off balance, it can keep you from meeting your goals and living your best life. In fact, your gut health not only affects your physical body but also your mental well-being too, lending itself to symptoms of depression and stress in many people.

Fortunately, despite the many different issues that can affect your gut health, there are also numerous treatments that can help you get back on track. Some — like probiotics — are easy to introduce into your daily routine via the foods you eat, while others require medicine to heal. From a “leaky” gut to irritable bowel syndrome, there are many ways your gut health can deteriorate, and some are preventable.

Here are a few things to consider when you’re having gut health issues, including common ailments and how to treat them.

 

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease

While it’s common for many people to experience acid reflux after eating a big meal, some people have a backup of stomach acid that occurs often enough to cause big problems, such as tooth erosion. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease — also called GERD — can cause pain in the chest and upper stomach area and can make daily activities such as eating and sleeping much more difficult. Extreme cases can require surgery, so talk to your doctor if you’re having these symptoms more than once or twice per week.

 

Take a look at all your options

Along with doctor-prescribed medications, there are several over-the-counter meds that can provide relief from stomach ailments. However, if you have a persistent problem due to inflammation, you might consider using CBD oil. Derived from the cannabis plant, CBD doesn’t provide the “high” that marijuana does, but has been shown to relieve many issues related to gut health. Do a little research first to find the right type of oil for your needs, as there are many different kinds.

 

Celiac Disease

A common gut-related issue that’s received more attention in recent years is Celiac Disease, which is brought on by food products that contain gluten. Bread, pasta, and beer are a few of the most common items that might contain gluten, and in general, staying away from wheat products is a good start in helping to get your gut back to normal. Symptoms might include bloating, diarrhea, and vomiting; consult your doctor if you experience any of these after changing your diet.

 

Add probiotics

Our bodies are full of different types of bacteria, and when the balance is thrown off within this microbiome, you might experience weight gain, constipation, bloating, or even skin issues. One easy way to remedy this is to add probiotics into your diet. These can be found in certain types of yogurt and cheese, as well as in fermented foods like sauerkraut. By making some small changes to your diet, you can ensure that your body’s chemistry is well-balanced.

Gut health is extremely important at any age, so talk to your doctor if you have any concerns. There may be a few simple steps you can take — such as changing up your diet and exercise routine — in order to get things back on track. By keeping your gut’s microbiome healthy and by using preventative tactics, you’ll be taking care of both your physical and your mental health, which will benefit you now and for years to come.

Walking the Path: Why Ayurveda?

After practicing Western medicine (Allopathy) for 25 years, I became disappointed with many aspects of the culture surrounding it – namely, the lack of emphasis on prevention, and the over-reliance on prescription drugs.

At the time, I wasn’t aware of the system of optimal health from India that is all about prevention. It’s a system that uses natural herbs instead of synthetics to promote well-being, a system that incorporates yoga for healing the body and mind. It’s called Ayurveda, or “the knowledge of life.”

Over the next few years, I discovered the ways in which Ayurveda can be a more effective approach to health, especially when it comes to treating mental unrest like anxiety and stress. Many diseases can be prevented as patients learn how to de-stress and create healthier daily routines.  The ultimate goal of Ayurveda is a healthy physical body, a calm (sattvic) mind, and a heart connection with Spirit.

Allopathy vs Ayurveda

Both Ayurveda and Allopathy (traditional Western medicine) have their place in health and healing. “Allo” means opposite, and “pathy” means disease. In allopathy, pharmaceutical drugs are prescribed that have opposite effects to the diseases’ symptoms. Sometimes, allopathy can be life-saving. Examples include the epi-pen (epinephrine injection) for a life-threatening bee sting allergy (anaphylaxis), and antidotes, like Narcan, for opiate overdose.

However, Allopathy has its shortcomings. It often focuses more on treating symptoms more than curing diseases. Anti-depressants like Zoloft are prescribed for depression, and medications like Xanax for anxiety. While these may relieve symptoms, they do not address the root cause of these issues.

Unfortunately, these synthetic drugs also come with long lists of side effects, and can actually negatively affect brain chemistry. Prozac was given a black-box warning by the FDA, the strongest caution given before a drug is yanked from the shelf. Why? Prozac made some suicidal patients worse, especially those in the 18-25-year-old age group.

Dr. Deepak Chopra put it bluntly: “I think it is just the fact that there is a lot of frustration when all you do is prescribe medication, you start to feel like a legalized drug pusher. That doesn’t mean that all prescriptions are useless, but it is true that 80 percent of all drugs prescribed today are of optional or marginal benefit.”

Why Ayurveda? Treat root causes, not symptoms

Ayurvedic medicine is, in many ways, opposite to the Western approach. According to Ayurvedic master Dr. David Frawley, deep-seated anxieties must be pulled out by their roots. Both Ayurveda and Yoga do so with the practices of yogic breath and mantra. These practices are yoga for your mind and key components in self-care. Pranayama and mantra are at the core of the Happiness Program and Sahaj Samadhi Meditation, taught at the Art of Living Retreat Center.

It’s all about prevention

One answer to “Why Ayurveda” is its emphasis on prevention, or Sva-stha-vrit-ta.

Svasthavritta means “the protocols by which one can remain healthy.”

So much disease (heart attack, stroke, cancer) could be prevented by awareness of these Ayurvedic protocols:

  • Treat organic fruits and veggies as medicine. You will be prescribed specific foods and healing spices based on your body-mind type, or dosha.
  • Develop a healthy exercise pattern like Yoga or Tai Chi.
  • Learn how to de-stress with mantra and pranayama (breath practices).
  • Learn the principles of Ayurvedic detox. Put no junk food in your body and no junk food in your mind. Try an Ayurvedic cleanse with superfoods like kitchadi.

Connection with Spirit

Another thing I love about Ayurveda is how it addresses our connection to Spirit. Allopathy seems dry in comparison to the holistic healing traditions of the East that are steeped in prayer and meditation.

Connection with Spirit is essential for complete health. Treating the body-mind without addressing Spirit leaves us dry, and often unhappy. Connection with Spirit helps us to realize our place in the Universe beyond time and space.

Of course, walking a spiritual path is a deeply personal decision. Dr. David Frawley tells us that spirituality is a big tent. He wrote that the Divine can be looked upon as a father, a mother, a brother or a friend — or as Nature, a saint, or the one divinity within us all: the higher Self.

It’s in your hands

Take charge of your health today. Don’t wait until something breaks. See an Ayurvedic practitioner and discover your dosha (body-mind type). You will then be prescribed a lifetime of better health: Svasthavritta — Ayurvedic essentials for staying healthy: right food, right exercise, right herbs, right sleep, and right actions.

There’s no quick fix

Ayurveda is not about the “quick fix” or taking pills. Ayurveda is about discovering the root causes of disease, then treating it. Root causes may be related to a toxic diet, a dysfunctional relationship, stressful work, or repetitive thoughts. Yoga, Ayurveda, and a contemplative lifestyle, including self-inquiry, are the keys to success.

Choose Ayurveda to stay healthy and prevent illness. Choose Allopathy when it can be of benefit. These two approaches can be complementary, and not mutually exclusive.

This guided body meditation for love & peace will help you to renew, refresh and connect with your deeper self. It is similar to the meditations we do at the start of our Thai Yoga Massage classes.

It is perfect for those with a beginning meditation practice or for more experienced practitioners. This guided meditation can also be used to help center yourself before starting to give a Thai Yoga Massage.

A guided body meditation that helps you to come into contact with every cell of your body will sensitize you to the quality of touch and how you connect with others, including your clients.

This is also a metta meditation which connects you to the loving kindness and compassion which is already in every cell of your body.

Connection, love, metta are at the heart of giving a great massage and living a more fulfilled life. And taking time everyday to think of who you are grateful for, who you want to acknowledge and things you are proud of plant the seeds to help make that a reality.

When you reflect and express who you are grateful for it brings you into the present moment and away from unhealthy stress. It brings you into a present moment that is filled with gratitude and metta and even if it’s just for a glimpse, that can change the complexion of your whole day.

Acknowledging others in our lives or in the world releases oxytocin and deepens your respect and connection with others.

Being proud of your accomplishments helps to rewire your brain and put you in alignment with your deeper purpose.

If you can be disciplined and take this time out everyday, what this exercise of being grateful and proud while acknowledging others really helps you with is to feel more alive, more vibrant and will help inspire you to fight through whatever challenges are coming up.

Giving a great massage that is built on love and kindness and which comes from your heart will help you to see those benefits in action and can help in your life’s relationships and interactions with the world.

Is it Safe & Effective to Learn Thai Yoga Massage Online?

In an age of online learning from building a house, fixing your car and learning an instrument, there is still a lot of hesitation on whether it is safe and effective to learn Thai Yoga Massage online.

One concern is that the only true way to learn is if a teacher can watch and correct your massage. Another is that it isn’t safe and both receiver and giver could get hurt. Yet another is that to develop intuitive touch and practice at a deep level you need to cultivate that in class.

In this video, I want to spark a discussion on if it really is safe and effective to learn Thai Yoga Massage Online. So please post your comments below. But also your suggestions for how to make learning Thai Yoga Massage online safer and more effective!

I am not necessarily advocating for one mode of learning only. I think if you can come to a class and learn, that is a terrific way to learn. I also think there are some more limitations for what you can effectively teach online, especially on a platform like YouTube where you are limited in how much interaction there is between teacher and student.

At the same time, I wholeheartedly believe that if the teacher provides a solid foundation and tools for teaching and the student is responsible enough to watch those videos, to have respect for the person they are massaging and the medium, then online videos are an incredible way to learn safe and effective ways to learn Thai Yoga Massage.

What’s more it is a terrific way to expose more people to loving touch, to their birthright as healers and how this art can be just as good to give as it is to receive.

Winter Wellness: Understanding the Impact of Seasonal Affective Disorder

Does your energy wane during the months of winter? Many people face a decline in their overall outlook when the seasons bring cold temperatures and short daylight cycles. Thankfully, if you seem to experience the “winter blues,” there are ways to combat the condition. 

Identifying Seasonal Affective Disorder

At first, depression linked to winter was thought to be a rare condition, but a reporter stepped out in 1981 to explain her personal seasonal struggles. As the Chicago Tribune explains, thousands of people responded with similar concerns, and soon seasonal affective disorder (aka SAD) was identified as a mental health concern

Who Suffers from SAD?

Seasonal affective disorder affects millions of people every year, and the farther you are from the equator, the more likely you are to have SAD. The symptoms relating to the condition are reasonably consistent and typically develop during fall, and ebb in spring. People suffering from SAD can experience a low, depressed mood and lose interest in doing normal activities. They also often have poor self-esteem, stress, anxiety, irritability, and ongoing fatigue. 

Energize Your Days

There are steps you can take to help manage SAD and the doldrums of winter. Boost your energy levels by spending time with friends, getting outdoors, and enjoying as much sunlight as possible. Take your dog for a walk, or lounge on a park bench to feed the birds. To avoid lethargy, tend to your gut health by eating a balanced, nutritious diet so your body has the materials it needs to make energy. If you’re feeling stressed, spend some time in meditation to quiet your mind and body, or do some journaling to help process thoughts and emotions. Learn some deep-breathing exercises, a technique that is often effective in reducing anxiety and depression, and helping to focus your energy and attention on positive and productive things. 

Adjust Your Environment

We like to think of our homes as a retreat from the rest of the world, but you might be surprised to find your home could be negatively contributing to your situation. Examine your living environment for ways it could be revamped to help you feel better. If you’re feeling fatigued, add brighter lights and check the temperatures in your home to ensure they promote productivity. Bring some plants into spaces where you spend time, as having some greenery can reduce stress and promote a positive outlook. Along those same lines, the colors in the rooms where you spend a lot of time could be part of the problem. Certain tones can make you feel more vibrant, such as reds and yellows, while some are soothing, like blues and greens. 

Participate in Therapy

If you take action and still are unable to alleviate the winter blues, or if you experience deep depression, it’s important to reach out to a medical professional or counselor for help. A doctor can determine if you are suffering from seasonal affective disorder or another health condition. There are three primary courses of professional therapy for SAD: behavioral therapy, prescription medication, and light therapy, any of which could be prescribed to help you.  Behavioral therapy involves looking at your thought patterns and finding healthy ways to help you cope with your struggles. There are also medications that might be prescribed to help you, such as antidepressants. With light therapy, you would be prescribed a special light therapy box, which you would spend time next to each day. 

SAD and Suicide

Some people who suffer from SAD occasionally become suicidal. Note that if you are thinking of hurting yourself, or you fear someone you love might be suicidal, it’s crucial to reach out for assistance immediately. In the US, call National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255, and in Canada, call a suicide hotline in your region.

If you’re experiencing the wintertime blues, there is no reason for you to suffer. Adjust your lifestyle and habits to help you feel better, or reach out for help. Next time winter comes around, the season can be brighter, happier, and healthier for you.

Reflections On Love and How Thai Massage Helps Bring More Love To You

Reflections on love and how Thai Massage helps to bring more love to your life is a product of how how this practice has helped me and countless others.

It’s an attempt at understanding why giving Thai Yoga Massage is so beneficial, going beyond all the physical benefits including helping to get rid of aches and pains.

A big part of what’s inspired me to keep giving and teaching for more than 17 years is because of how it has helped me to know more about love and the sweet ways Thai Massage has helped bring more love into my love.

Giving massage from the heart, through the heart certainly helps to give a better massage, but it also helps to taste a beautiful kind of loving connection and then teaches you how to bring that into more of the relationships in your life.

Taking a moment to reflect on what love is and how Thai Massage helps bring more love to you, can help you to understand the different ways we nurture love. Love with Spirit, with one another and for ourselves and by having all three aspects being vibrant in our life, we have more meaning, connection and harmony.

2-Step Shoulder & Neck Table Thai Yoga Massage Tutorial

In two minutes you get to learn easy, effortless and effective Neck & Shoulder Table Thai Yoga Massage techniques!

These can be used on loved ones and in professional settings to get out knots, tension and pain from the shoulders and neck.

You get to use your fingertips, forearms and elbows so there is no strain on your body.

I show you how to do this on a massage table, but it can easily be adapted onto a bed. Just have your partner lie down and put a chair in front of them so you can sit comfortably and away you go.

If you had just 5 minutes to give your partner a massage, chances are this is the perfect session to give them. The tension we hold in our neck and on the back of our shoulders is likely the number one reason for getting a Table Thai Yoga Massage!

Dr Blake Martin PhD : Thai Massage & Parkinson’s, Stroke & Alzeihmer’s

Dr Blake Martin was a Thai Yoga Massage teacher first and then went on to complete a PhD in a Kinesiology. In this video he shares some of his personal experience for how Thai Yoga Massage helped his Parkinson’s clients and what the research points to between movement therapies and people living with Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and after a stroke.

Blake also shares advice for what to tell clients after a Thai massage in order to further the benefits of a treatment.

Blake originally decided to pursue a Graduate Diploma in Neuroscience after witnessing some of the incredible results his Parkinson’s patients were having with Thai Yoga Massage. He not only saw improvements in their body, but also in how they were able to think.

That thirst for understanding how mind and body work together and the hands on experience of body centered practices that Blake has been engaged in for over 30 years as a dancer, massage therapist and massage teacher help to formulate his unique gifts. But it’s his love of life and all things that move that really bring him to another level as a teacher of anatomy, science and massage.

He’s is incredibly talented at bringing science to life and helping students apply this knowledge into their practice. When Dr. Blake talks people listen 🙂 🙂

Energy Healing with Thai Massage Teacher Robert Henderson (Part 2)

Thai Yoga Massage teacher Robert Henderson is ‘the energy guy’. In part two of our interview he gives a clear demonstration of how to work energy blockages out of the body. He shows the difference between Thai Massage as energy work and Thai Massage as bodywork.

Robert shares in crystal clear ways how ones connection to a client energetically is so different from the techniques one would associate with Thai Massage when the focus is on the physical body.

As such if helping someone deal with fear, pain, insecurity, anger, stubbornness or any other number of energy blockages in the body, the methods are all about following and releasing the energy. One need to do very few physical movements in order to help your clients release that energy.

These four moves are some of my massage therapists and yoga teacher’s favorites to give because of how effectively they target areas of great need with little effort.

The fact that you get to use your feet for part of it also makes it playful and easier on your body. This sequence also includes sitting on the table, so it is very multi-dimensional!

Thai Massage Teacher Rick Gold Part 2

It’s part two of my interview with one of the founding North American teachers of Thai Yoga Massage, Rick Gold.

This week he shares some of his research into what makes Thai Massage therapeutic medicine. He also shares the story behind the music he co-produces that is an incredible accompaniment to Thai Massage and all forms of Asian bodywork.

He’s helped to make four different projects, each with multiple albums that explore the doshas, the chakras, and various aspects of healing Chinese medicine.

All in all, Rick Gold plays a valuable part in the history of Thai Massage and helping to establish its credibility in the West. This interview and part one help to tell that story and fill on with gratitude that a teacher such as Rick was there to help pave the way for future generations.

North American Pioneer Thai Massage Teacher Rick Gold (Part 1)

Hold on to your hats! This week I am interviewing one of the founding North American teachers of Thai Yoga Massage, Rick Gold.

In incredibly eloquent terms in this first part of the interview, Rick shares the essence of what drew him to Thai Massage and why he cherishes it to this day. He shares why it is so essential for yogis, massage therapists and anyone on a spiritual path to understand Thai Massage as a means to deepen ones’ practice.

He is such a gifted story teller among the many talents he has! Rick’s part of the 1980s first wave of learning, school building and giving both acupuncture and Thai Massage and has a PhD in Psychology. He’s dedicated his life to bridging Eastern and Western wisdom and shares a ton of it here.

It is a fantastic journey that starts in college in 1971 which eventually brought him to Thailand in 1988.

One aspect to address here is that Thai Massage and Thai Yoga Massage are fundamentally the same thing. Many teachers, schools and practitioners started referring to the practice as ‘Thai Yoga Massage’ in the late 80s and 90s to differentiate their approach from both ‘cookie cutter’ massage parlors and the sex trade which seemed to be synonymous with Thai Massage.

Nowadays, depending on where you live, the term Thai Massage may still have that connotation. But in many places Thai Massage and Thai Yoga Massage are interchangeable as names and for well established high quality education.
